Yo-Yo Sisterhood of the Traveling Panties

I am tired of snow, and wind, and being cold. I am tired of gray skies, and slush, and cold feet. I am tired of the gloom of winter and I am ready for spring.  I’m going to dye my underpants!Aren't they pretty?!

I try to do this every spring because it makes me happy. It’s fun to dye them, and it’s just as much fun to wear them. I smile every time I put them on.

The first day of spring is March 20th. That’s the day.

This year I’m going to do what I’ve been threatening to do for years — I’m going to offer to dye YOUR underwear too.

I don’t have any siblings, but I am part of the Sisterhood of Quilters and I want to spread the smiles around. (Nobody has to know you’re wearing hand-dyed panties unless you tell them; it will be our little secret.)

  1. This looks like it would be fun! I just bought some new ones, but I don’t think I am daring enough to get them dyed…yet. Besides, not sure if I am willing to risk getting one pair back that was yellow- I hate yellow clothing! LOL!

But this is a really fun, fantastic idea! I hope you get a lot of people willing to give this a try!

  2. What a hoot! Only Ami could do/suggest something like this. This will set a new standard among quilters. Perhaps it should be mandatory for all quilters. Any comments Madison?

  4. What a wonderful generous gesture!!! Wanted to ask – are you still using Setapaint to dye your underwear?

Yes, I’m using SetaColor. It’s awesome. No fading, won’t rub off and turn your rear funny colors either.~~Ami

  5. AMI! You are going to have to begin such emails with a warning, “Do not read until you’ve swallowed that last sip of coffee.” That way, I won’t have to clean my computer monitor!! You are a hoot! And a breath of fresh air in this too long Michigan winter season.
    love you,

  8. Ami—where DO you get all these ideas? If I can get to the store (shop owners don’t have a life!) I’ll send some to you. What a hoot (and how many times do we hear that phrase when speaking about Ami Sims???)

  9. Ami: you are such a hoot! I love you! The rest of the world must seem so bland to you, because you reflect such joy and laughter and light. I do agree with debi from MI. You really do have to put a warning at the beginning of some of these posts! I am SO glad that I hadn’t taken a sip of tea before I opened this or my whole workarea would have been decorated!
Spring is coming Ami, it won’t be long now!

  11. debi said you need to send a warning “Do not read until you’ve swallowed that last sip of coffee.” Don’t forget the Depends warning, either! Some of your stuff makes me laugh so hard, I need Depends!!!

  12. wow! How fun is that. We are sick and tired of the cold and gray days in Central NY too. I think I will throw a few pairs in the dye pot to brighten up my week. Liza

  13. Absolutely awesome idea! I will use up some of my precious gasoline to make a special trip to get some undies. It will be well worth it!

So where do I go to find Seta Color?

Hey, maybe my husband is sick and tired of the gray, too. Maybe he’d like to have his undies transformed into something more uplifting…hmmmm.

  14. Ami, I think all the others who’ve posted before me have said it all!!! I don’t live up in the frozen north country, but colored undies sure sounds like spring time… even from sunny SW Arkansas.
Thank you so much for bringing life to our sometimes ordinary lives!

  15. What does Madison have to say about all this dyeing? Do you have his doggie respirator ready? Good luck, dyeing is a tricky business. Better thee than me. Hope his tail doesn’t get in a dye pot!!!

  17. Ami, when I collapse in a heap at the computer, hanging on for dear life in case I wet myself , my husband raises an eyebrow and says”Ami Simms again! What is it this time?” Thank you for all the laughter and joy over the years

  18. Can’t wait to get my designer undies in colors unknown! Only problem is you aren’t giving us much time to get them to you. I just ordered some new cotton undies on-line so hopefully they will arrive on time and I will be able to join the sisterhood.

  20. LOL! Omigod…. if only my panties were as tiny as yours! Thanks for the deelightful thought. What next? Tie dyed panties? Yeah, yeah. That’s it!

No, it isn’t. Dyed only. Not tie-dyed. BUT, if anybody wants to get their knickers in a twist and ruberband them, I might put some far out colors on them.~~ Ami

  21. Oh my! This sounds like fun.
My daughter just gave a wedding shower and one of the “games” was to Guess the Number of Panties in the Jar. I took a Sun Tea jar and filled it with mine. I found TWENTY-THREE pair in my drawer. No telling how many were in the hamper. And I couldn’t find my favorite red pair. So should I buy even more??
Hmmm. This is sort of a rare chance, isn’t it?

  22. I knew it! You’ve done it again, cracked us up and sent us running for panty liners! I suspect you will be awash in undies before you know it! The link to the Artful Bras sent in by Bettyann Shaver was fabulous–another run for the liners and the best laugh I’ve had in long time!

  23. Ami!!! I love you. I am in the winter duldrums and you made me laugh out loud! I am going to pass this along to all my many winter doldrum sewing friends to get them ready for spring also.

Warnings would be great because I laughed so loud I almost woke my son up! He works nights and is sleeping. I really didn’t want to have to explain this.

    Look for my envelope!

    Love you Ami!

  29. Neat idea! I had a friend here in Manitoba, Canada a few years ago who would buy a bunch of pairs of long johns in the middle of summer and go outside in the yard, set up a table and space dye them all and then give them to all her friends for Christmas presents.
They were extremely well received! Also as you say no one know what we were wearing under them.
I still have a pair and they are pure cotton bliss when it is 20 or more below zero!
